How Big Did You Say?
by Sean Meek, Director of Project CREATION
One of the baseless charges made by skeptics against the Flood story is
that Noah couldn't have built a boat as large as the one described in
Genesis, and it was a BIG boat. It measured approximately 450 feet long
by 75 feet wide by 45 feet high. As so often happens with those who
dispute the Bible, all one has to do is to look in the right place and
the proof for the Biblical account will appear. So it has with regard
to the Ark.
In the early 20th century a lake in Italy was drained to
reveal a massive Roman ship built during the reign of Emperor Caligula.
It was over 300 feet long and carried a crew of approximately 1000 men
including hundreds of rowers. Historian Athenaeus wrote in a book
called The Deipnosophists of a ship built in the 3rd century BC that
was 420 feet long. These ships were built using the same types of
materials and a technology similar to that used by Noah to build the
Ark. Keep in mind that people in the pre-Flood world lived a long time,
allowing them to learn a great deal and they had many plants and
resources available to them that were later destroyed by the Genesis
Flood.
