Why It Matters! Where Was Atlantis?
One of the most regular questions I get asked is about Atlantis, was it a real place or a fanciful creation? The story of Atlantis is from Egypt. It was an Egyptian story brought to Athens around 600 BC by a man named Solon. 150 years later Plato read the story and included it in his writings. Because Plato was a well regarded Greek thinker, people came to think that the Atlantis story was a Greek story. This misunderstanding led people to look in all the wrong places for where Atlantis had been.
The Atlantis story is that an ancient people had accomplished great things, but had also become an evil and violent society. These people were judged and condemned by God and their island nation was flooded and most of them drowned.
The Atlantis story is from Egypt, one of the four ancient civilizations that came out of the Tower of Babel incident. Four civilizations came out of Babel, Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus River (Pakistan) civilization and China. Each of these civilizations had an Atlantis type of story that derives from a common cultural memory of the Genesis Flood. The Atlantis story is simply a paganized version of the Genesis Flood story. So where was Atlantis? It was in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Antarctica. Both the Bible and geology make clear that before the Flood the Earth was a single continent that was then torn apart during the Flood. Pagan stories often contain a kernel of truth; the Atlantis story is just one example of this.
