Global Warming: The Truth, the Whole Truth and nothing but the Truth
With the election of a new President the issue of global warming will probably get a lot more attention. Unfortunately this issue may not receive the reasoned approach that it deserves.
When taken over a long enough time line global warming is clearly happening. In the first half of the 19th century, the approximately 500 year long Little Ice Age of the Northern Hemisphere came to an end. From the 13th in to the 19th centuries the average temperature of the Northern Hemisphere was several degrees below average. This temperature drop caused Winters to be longer, Summers to be shorter and glaciers to expand significantly. Before the period of the Little Ice Age, from the 8th thru the 13th centuries, had been the Medieval Warming Period, a 500 period of global warming when average temperatures were several degrees above average. This warming caused the Summers to be longer, Winters to be shorter and the glaciers to become significantly smaller.
Global climate change is a real phenomenon, but it is part of the natural rhythm of the Sun and the Earth, humans have very little to do with it. It is because the Sun varies in the intensity of its output, that the temperature of the Earth varies. But even this fails to fully appreciate what a remarkable engineering job that God did when He created the Earth.
Higher temperatures cause more water evaporation, which causes more clouds to form, which causes more sunlight to be reflected back in to space, which causes the temperature to drop.
While higher temperatures may be causing the edges of the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets to melt, it is also creating record amounts of snow to fall in their interiors. This is another aspect of the Earth’s self-correcting and self-regulating mechanism. One of the little reported aspects of these record snowfalls is that the Antarctic Adelie penguins are becoming an endangered species. The record snowfalls are killing them.
The evidence for a slight rise in the Earth’s temperature is quite persuasive. What is also quite clear is that human activity has virtually nothing to do with it. The Earth’s 500-year climate cycles are well documented. The problem is when agenda driven junk science is used to make public policy decisions that are too often either useless or can in fact be harmful.
God created a remarkably resilient world for us. We need to be good stewards of this gift that God has given us, but not make decisions about the Earth without really understanding what is going on.
