So reads the title of an article by the self-styled “Skeptic”, Michael Shermer, in the evolutionist magazine Scientific American. The article is about evolutionist Stuart Kaufman’s attempt to harmonize “god” with evolutionism. Kaufman is apparently under the delusion that this is something new. What he is really doing is simply repackaging the ancient pagan religions into a new box. By whatever name, Hinduism, Buddhism, animism or any of the new age religions, it is simply pantheism, nature is god and god is nature, with new names.
There is within people a God-given need to believe in something bigger than themselves. Combine that with the rapidly growing body of evidence of intelligent design and you get a Stuart Kaufman inventing his “new” religion. Many people will jump on Kaufman’s bandwagon thinking that they can be both “scientific” and “spiritual” at the same time. I would expect many of the compromising churches that observe evolution Sunday to welcome this newfound spirituality with open arms.
None of this of course is actually new. For thousands of years people have been attempting to reduce God to a manageable size. From the pre-Flood paganism, to the mystery religion of Babylon, to modern day paganism under the rubric of New Age the desire is always the same, to make God man-sized.
