We are fearfully and wonderfully made! The Infant Grammarian
That all truth is God’s truth is surely seen in the Slate magazine article of August 26, 2006 titled “The Infant Grammarian, the Genius of Baby Talk” on the book The Infinite Gift by Charles Yang. Yang is a Yale linguist and no friend of Creationists, but he was looking for the truth about language development in children and found clear evidence of the fact of Creation. Yang is one of a group of linguists led by Noam Chomsky who believe that the human capacity for language is an inborn trait. Not surprisingly Chomsky and his group are not beloved by most evolutionists. Although Chomsky and Yang et al don’t publicly say it, there is an implicit recognition in their research that the human ability to learn and use language is so complex that it has to be the result of Intelligent Design.
Yang asserts in his book that children are born with an innate sense of grammar, that all that they have to do is to learn the specific rules of the language they are born into. For most children before age twelve their brains are not yet hardwired for language. This is made clear when children are transplanted from one language region to another. While their parents may struggle for years to learn the new language, usually with a significant accent, the children are generally fluent within a few months.
I have been told that I did not begin to speak until I was 3 years old, but began speaking in full sentences almost immediately. Language is just one of the many amazing things about humans that show that we are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God.
