Dr. Raymond Damadian - A Creationist Who Created Science – MRI
One of the greatest medical advancements of the 20th century was the invention of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The man who made the basic discoveries that made the MRI possible is Dr. Raymond Damadian. In 1971 Damadian published a paper pointing out that since healthy cells and cancerous cells have a distinctively different metabolism, the differences could be detected using magnetic resonance imaging. Over the next years Dr. Damadian invented the basic devices required to make it work and in 1977 he produced first MRI of a living human skull.
Like so many inventors, Dr. Damadian had to defend his patents against those who attempted to steal them. Eventually his case ended up before the US Supreme Court where his rights to the MRI discoveries were upheld.
Not surprisingly Dr. Damadian has been honored for his discovery by many organizations, with one notable exception, the Nobel Prize Committee. In 2003 the Nobel Prize for diagnostic MRI scanning was awarded to Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield, but not to Dr. Raymond Damadian, the inventor of the MRI. While Lauterbur and Mansfield had made some original innovations to MRI scanning, they hadn’t invented it.
When the Nobel Prize was announced many people familiar with what was going on, including many evolutionists, believed that Dr. Damadian had been denied a share of the prize because he is an outspoken Christian and Creationist. One of the more tiresome parts of my job at Project CREATION is reading some of the nonsense that comes from evolutionists and their allies among Bible compromisers.
One of their most common criticisms of Creationists and ID proponents is that papers demonstrating the scientific evidence for Creation don’t get published in peer-reviewed evolutionist journals. The main reason for that happening is the anti-Creation bigotry rampant throughout the evolutionist establishment as what happened to Dr. Damadian makes clear. If a scientist with the stature of Dr. Damadian can be discriminated against, what chance would an Associate Professor from Podunk U have for getting a paper supporting Creation published? People in the academic and science communities learn very early to keep their mouths shut about any doubts that they have about evolutionism.
