So That Even Their Enemies Fear Them
In the evolutionist magazine Scientific American is a regular feature by self-described skeptic Michael Shermer. Shermer is a God hating atheist who is in fact the most gullible of men, swallowing almost any nonsense out there, as long as it is anti-God. All of which makes his October 2006 column so revealing. Titled Darwin on the Right Why Christians and conservatives should accept evolution, it is nothing more than a rehash of compromise theology that claims that it doesn’t really matter how or when God created, only that He did it. What is most interesting about this column is that it was written at all.
You can tell a lot about a person or cause by the friends and enemies that they make. The fact that this enemy of God is attempting to find a common ground with Biblical Creationists and Intelligent Design proponents is a testament to the growing influence that they are having. Sadly there are many that have embraced various Bible compromises that will see this as a positive development and will embrace the ideas presented.
What Shermer is totally oblivious to and Bible compromisers willfully ignorant of is that the foundational question is not how or when God created, as important as that is, but is the Bible truly God’s Word? It is irrelevant to say that God could have created using evolution over billions of years, when He clearly and unequivocally tells us that He did it in six days a few thousand years ago.
Those in the evolutionist establishment are recognizing the growing influence of Biblical Creationists and Intelligent Design proponents and doing all that they can do to sideline them into irrelevancy. Unfortunately there are all too many Christians who will gleefully aid the evolutionists in what they are doing, seeing themselves as oh so modern and scientific in their thinking and will see compromise as a way to build bridges between competing groups.
How far some people will go in promoting compromise and repudiating God is seen in something that happened earlier this year called Evolution Sunday. On February 12th, hundreds of churches across America celebrated Darwin’s birthday and the evolutionary theory he promoted.
A representative sermon of those given on Evolution Sunday is the one given by Pastor Mitch Brown, Evanston Mennonite Church, Evanston, Illinois. In his sermon Brown states that “until Darwin, I think, people still had hope that God was out there”, “What Darwin did was to remove God from the physical world.” And that life was the result of “a mindless struggle that took place over unimaginable amounts of time.” He goes on to say that “Faith is required not physical evidence” even though repeatedly in the Bible God tells us in verses like Psalm 19:1-3 and Romans 1:20-23 to look to His Creation to gain some understanding of who He is and what He has done. But of course Brown repudiates what God has told us about Himself. Brown goes on to say that “God is not going to help”, and that “We are alone.” How far Brown goes in his apostasy is seen when he tells his congregation that “He (Jesus) did not come down from the cross.” Brown is sadly representative of so many who “worship the creature, rather than the Creator”.
One of the churches that participated was the United Church of Christ and is descended from the Pilgrims and Puritans of New England. Another, the Presbyterian Church USA started from the teachings of John Knox, the great reformer of Scotland. The United Methodist Church came from the teachings of John Wesley. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America came out of the teachings of the great reformer Martin Luther and the Episcopal Church is the American branch of the Anglican Church that supplied many of the translators of the King James Bible. None of these churches set out to repudiate God and His Word, but they ended up doing so because they began to compromise on the foundational book of the Bible, Genesis.
So what are Christians who actually believe the Bible and have faith in God to do in response to both a world and apostate Christians who are working to destroy people’s faith and spread their bad news of hopelessness? First be knowledgeable of both the Bible and science facts. One of the best ways to challenge evolutionists of any style is by knowing the right questions to ask. Second be firm and uncompromising in proclaiming the whole truth.
It is also important to remember that only one we are ultimately responsible to is God Himself.
