Science versus the Bible - The Conflict That Never Was
Modern science is the systematic study of God’s created Universe. It was only out of a Christian worldview that it was even possible for modern science to develop. It was out of the Reformation of the 16th century that the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century developed. One of the most significant things that the Reformation did was to return individual responsibility for personal salvation to the Christian faith. It was no longer the Pope or a priest who would secure your eternal life. The idea of individual responsibility for discovering truth quickly migrated to other areas including the study of the natural world, science.
It was the belief in individual responsibility plus the belief in a law giving God that created the philosophical foundation for modern science. It is no accident that modern science developed primarily in the Reformation countries and that the scientists who were responsible for developing almost all of the major areas of science were Reformation Christians.
One of the most common lies promoted by evolutionists and compromisers is that there is a conflict between the Bible and science. This of course has never been the case; the only conflict is between Creation and the religion of evolutionism. The absence of any true conflict can easily be seen in the accomplishments of scientists who were also Biblical Creationists.
One good example of how a proper appreciation of God’s Creation can aid in scientific investigation are the discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton. It was Isaac Newton’s absolute belief in a law giving God that laid the foundation for his scientific discoveries. It was his observation of apples falling from trees and of the Moon orbiting the Earth that led him to realize that the same force, gravity, was causing both things to happen. It was out of his observations and proper understanding of God’s created order that Newton formulated the law of gravity.
Newton was not only a brilliant scientist, but also a devout Christian who wrote more books about the Bible than about science. Isaac Newton is just one of the many scientists who believed in Biblical Creation. Newton’s discoveries were extremely important in their own right, but they also make the point that there is no conflict between true science and the Bible. The only conflict is between the religion of evolutionism and facts of this world as presented in both God’s Word and true science.
