Why It Matters! Why the Age of the Earth is a Critical Issue
Those who seek to deny or compromise Biblical Creation first have to deny the Biblical age of the earth of between 6000 and 7000 years old. Physicist Dr. Alan Hayward summarizes a belief common to those who promote the idea that the earth is billions of years old in the following statement. “We share a belief in an inspired Bible. We agree that Darwin was mistaken, and that God is the Creator of every living thing. Compared with this, the question of the age of the Earth pales into insignificance.” The problem with any compromise with what the Bible tells us is where do you stop? Compromisers like to think that you can take out one fact and leave it at that. The age of the earth question shows why that cannot be done. The reason it cannot be done is simple; you cannot logically stop compromising. If the earth is billions of years old and the fossils represent those billions of years, than the Genesis Flood is of no consequence in earth’s natural history. It also means that God created death and it was not the result of Adam and Eve’s sin. It means that death and suffering have no moral significance, but that God created death and suffering because He enjoyed it. Not only would compromisers have us believe that God enjoys death and suffering, but also He then blamed Adam and Eve for something that wasn’t their fault. So with compromise theology, not only would God be a monster who enjoys the death and suffering that He created, but blames others for what He did.
Attempting to compromise the Bible is like pulling a thread on a cheap sweater; it all begins to unravel. Suddenly all the verses that speak of God’s mercy and forgiveness begin to look self-serving and manipulative. All of the Bible would be built on lies and deception. As important as the question of Creation is, it is not the central question. The central is, and always has been, is the Bible really God’s Word? If the answer is yes, than neither Dr. Hayward nor anyone else has the right to change anything in it. If the Bible is not the Word of God, than why should we pay any attention to it at all? Those who seek to compromise the Bible routinely state that it is “reasonable” to believe that the earth is billions of years old. But human reason can be made to come to any conclusion it seeks, so our standard of truth can never be our fallible reason, but must be God’s infallible Bible.
