Global Warming Heats up and Cools down
As has been the case in the past with reports on global warming, the real story is not as clear-cut as some of the headlines would lead people to believe. While reports on the melting of the edges of Arctic and Antarctic icecaps is occasionally reported in the media and used to promote various political agendas, there is another side to this story. A report a few months ago told of the plight of the Adelie penguins whose eggs were being killed by the greatly increased snow fall on the Adelie Peninsula of Antarctica. Now a report from the University of Missouri announces that the East Antarctic ice sheet is increasing by approximately 45 billion tons a year, an indication of how much more snow is falling now than in the past.
Global warming may be happening or it may not be, the evidence is still not clear. Even if it is happening though, the results of it are at this time completely unpredictable. For instance if warmer temperatures cause the edges of ice sheets to melt, but also cause greater snowfall in the interior, the warming may have no effect at all on sea levels. Even if global warming is happening, why it may be happening is also not at all clear. Whether it is human activity or simply normal global climate shifting is a question still without an answer.
