6 Thousand Years or 6 Billion Years
Does It Really Matter?
A common remark I have heard from people is "what matters is that God
created, not how long it took Him to do it", but they are wrong. The fundamental
question is not about creation itself, as important as that is, but who
is in authority, God or man. The only way that anyone would imagine
that the earth is more than a few thousand years old is by putting the
speculations of men, masquerading as science, above the clear words of
God in His Bible.
Those who seek to "harmonize", compromise, an old age for the Earth with the Bible, try to present it as though it was supportive of the Bible's authority, but that doesn't work. The problem with attempting to remake part of the Bible is that it distorts the rest.
For if the earth were really billions of years old than death and disease would have been here for millions of years and they would have been created by God. The Bible tells us that death and suffering came into the world by the sin of Adam and Eve, but the compromisers would want us to believe that God made animals and people and then made them suffer and die simply because He enjoyed it. They want us to believe that death and suffering have no moral basis, but are something that God created. The kind of God that the compromisers present is at complete odds with the loving God presented to us in the Bible.
The Biblical evidence for a quick, recent creation is clear. The Hebrew word for day is yom. In the Bible where yom is preceded by an ordinal number, first, second, third, etc., it means a literal 24-hour day. This is also the case where the term "evening and morning" is used. Twelve times in the first chapter of Genesis God tells us that He did His work in six literal 24 hour days. God repeats this in the Fourth Commandment making it clear that the days were regular days. If God had meant to tell us of long periods of time, there are Hebrew words He could have used to tell us that. Compromisers on the this issue, whether they say they believe in the Gap Theory, Progressive Creation, Theistic Evolution or some other invention, are saying that God really doesn't know what happened and the words of the Bible can't be trusted.
The compromisers are also saying that Jesus didn't really know what He was talking about. Jesus regularly quoted from the first eleven chapters of Genesis, always treating these Scriptures as an accurate history of the earth.
Those who seek a compromise the Bible and various old age theories for the age of the Earth usually say that science requires us to believe in an old Earth. This is not true. What evolutionists have done, and compromisers have accepted, is to take a bit of science fact, radioactive decay does exist, and mix it with pure fiction, that the age of something can be determined by radioactive decay. One example of this fiction is from a volcano in Hawaii.
In the Journal of Geophysical Research, vol. 73, no. 14, researchers tested lava that had been erupted in 1801. Understand that radioactive decay aging doesn't even begin until the lava has cooled off. Yet from lava that was less than 200 years old when it was tested, the researchers obtained radioactive "ages" of between 700 million to 2-1/2 billion years old. The authors of the article try to explain this absurdity, but can't because they have accepted the greater absurdity of radioactive/radiocarbon dating. Similar ridiculous "ages" have been found for lava in the Grand Canyon, Mt. St. Helens, New Zealand and other areas of the Earth.
There is no scientific test for determining the age of any object. The only way to know the age of anything is from eyewitnesses or historical records, such as the Bible. The Bible gives us an accurate history of the Earth from the beginning, a few thousand years ago. We can believe God's words rather than the useless speculations of men.
