We Are Losing Our Children
The above is the title of a speech given by T. C. Pinckney, a former
Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention in 2001. He pointed
out that research has found that 70% of the children now attending
church will be unchurched by the age of 20. Add to that that only about
30% of today’s youth attend church at all, that means that within two
years of leaving high school only about 10% of young people will still
be in church. Why this is happening is the result of both the actions
and inactions of Christians and atheists/evolutionists.
In the 1830’s Horace Mann and some wealthy Unitarians lobbied the
Massachusetts legislature to establish a state run public school
system. Up until then parents ran their schools thru their churches.
What Horace Mann and the Unitarians wanted to do was to get Christian
churches out of the education business. They knew what Benjamin Kidd
knew when he wrote “Give us the young and we will create a new mind and
a new earth in a single generation”. Ten years later Ross L. Finney,
Ph.D. wrote “It is the business of teachers to run not merely the
school, but the world; and the world will never be truly civilized
until they assume that responsibility”. The American Humanist
Association knows what kind of “civilized” world they want, “In order
to capture this nation, one has to totally remove moral and spiritual
values and absolutes from the thinking of the child. The child has to
think that there is no standard of right and wrong, that truth is
relative, and that diversity is the only absolute to be gained.” The
atheists/evolutionists have been remarkably successful in making their
belief system the guiding philosophy of American public education. The
fact that there are many good Christians in the public schools does not
change the atheist foundation it is now built upon.
How the school system went from Christian to atheist in its foundation
is a matter of history, what you do about it is a matter of choice. How
many churches and Sunday schools give lessons on Biblical biology,
astronomy and geology? God thought these subjects important enough to
be included in His Book. The Bible gives us lessons on these subjects.
If the churches don’t teach what the Bible says on these subjects, who
will? The public schools will be glad to teach their atheistic version.
Our children must be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in
them. This is one place where ignorance is not bliss.
What prompted my writing this article was an email I received from
Heidi, a parent of a student at one of the schools where I had the
Creation Museum this April. She wrote that she objected to a statement
in a letter that is sent home to parents before I arrive at a school.
This sentence was “The books & materials can be an on-going
resource to equip & empower you & your children to oppose the
evolutionist establishment & philosophy.” She wrote, “I think that
encouraging such “opposition” is not an appropriate message to send to
our children & that tolerance of differing views (so long as they
are not harmful, illegal or immoral) should be encouraged. We each have
a right to our own religious freedom & beliefs, & teaching our
children to actively “oppose” those views of others seems to fly in the
face of Christian doctrine”. But what could possibly be more harmful
than the philosophy/religion of evolutionism which repudiates God?
In my reply to her I pointed out that Jesus said that He was the Way,
the Truth and the Life and that no one could come to the Father but by
Him. Jesus is utterly intolerant of error. He will forgive our
sins, but He will never excuse them. There is only one Truth, that is
God’s Truth. In this world none of us will ever come to a complete
knowledge of all of God’s Truth, but we do need to acknowledge that it
is there. Heidi wrote that “Jesus is my personal Savior & I’ve come
to know him to be much different (more loving, embracing, encouraging,
& peace-loving) than you describe”. What Heidi fails to recognize
is that the most loving thing you can do is to tell someone who is on
the road to Hell that they are wrong, that they need to repent and
start over. That is the kind of love Jesus showed during His ministry
on earth and the kind of love He still shows us thru the Holy
Spirit.
Heidi is one of that class of Christians who think that you can get
along in the world by going along with the world and that tolerance
means acceptance of all ideas. She is the kind of Christian who wants
to see the love of God, but ignore the justice of God. God wants all
people to come to him, but will judge those who reject him.
All children are homeschooled, wherever their formal instruction takes
place, because the first and most important teachers are always the
parents. Parents must be able to equip their children with the
knowledge both from the Bible and from God’s Creation to effectively
refute the deceptions of the secularists, evolutionists and anyone else
who denies the truth of God.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2
