Genesis - True History or Jewish Fables?
All
of the Bible hangs on the truthfulness of Genesis. If God doesn't tell
us the truth from the first words of the Bible, when
does He start telling it to us? Jesus quoted from and
referred to Genesis more than any other book in the
Hebrew Bible. If Jesus was quoting from a book of
invented stories, as theological liberals and
compromisers maintain, then Jesus would either have been a
fraud or a fool and of course He was neither.
Our belief in the truthfulness of the Bible is based on faith, but not
blind faith. Our faith is based on the evidence that
God has given to us in His book. The evidence of the
Bible's truthfulness comes in several areas including;
prophecy, history and science.
The prophecy in the Bible is one sure sign of divine authorship. The
birth of Jesus in Bethlehem was foretold in Micah 5:2
hundreds of years before it occurred. This is just
one of the hundreds of fulfilled prophecies contained in the Bible.
The science in the Bible is remarkable in that the things written show
the kind of knowledge that could only have been known
to God when they were first written in the Bible. In
Genesis 22:17 God tells Abraham that there are trillions
of stars in space, as many stars in the sky as grains
of sand on a seashore. At the time that God told
Abraham about the stars, Abraham could only have seen
about 4000 stars. The true number of stars was something that was known
only to God at that time.
Thousands of years ago the Greeks taught that the earth was a solid
base and the sky a crystalline sphere with stars
fixed in it. The Hindus at that time taught that the
earth rested on the back of an elephant that was on the
back of a turtle that swam in the eternal sea. At the
same time God was telling us in Job 26:7 that the
earth hangs on nothing, a fact that was not
discovered by humans for centuries. The ideas of the
Greeks and Hindus are now seen for the silly ideas
that they were, but the divine scientific knowledge given
to us by God has been confirmed by true science.
The Bible is a book on many subjects with history being one of the main
areas covered. Bible history is therefore an area
that has been consistently attacked by the enemies of
the Bible. Years ago skeptics said the Bible couldn't be
trusted because it spoke of a great Hittite Empire to
the north of Israel and no evidence had been found
that this empire had ever existed. Then archaeologists dug
in the right spot and found that what the Bible had
described about the Hittites was exactly correct.
In the 1950's an archaeologist named Kathleen Kenyon claimed that her
excavation of Jericho had shown that the Biblical
story of its destruction was wrong. Her conclusions
were based on bits of pottery she had found. Her claims were
widely trumpeted by skeptics as "proof" that the
Bible was wrong. A few years later other
archaeologists found that the evidence tells a very different
story. They found that the walls of Jericho had
fallen down, that the city had then been burned and
that huge amounts of grain had been left untouched in the
destroyed city, all of which supported the Bible
story as told to us in the book of Joshua.
The Bible is a book of reality that God gave to us. When we take it for
what it is, God's word, then we can better understand
both God and the world He created.
"For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?"
John 5: 46-47
